Gananath Obeysekere is Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at Princeton University. He received his undergraduate education at University of Ceylon, Peradeniya and then subsequently at the University of Washington. He is a world-renowned scholar in the field of anthropology and has published extensively on anthropology of religion and psychoanalysis and anthropology, and more recently on historical anthropology.
He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Sri Lanka.His books include Land Tenure in Village Ceylon (1967), Medusa’s Hair (1981), The Cult of the Goddess Pattini (1984), Buddhism Transformed, (1988, with Richard Gombrich), The Work of Culture (1990), The Apotheosis of Captain Cook: European Mythmaking in the Pacific (1992), and Making Karma (2002).His latest publication is the Doomed King: A Requiem for Sri Vikrama Rajasingha (2017).
